On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will come across the United States, allowing our students to witness a rare solar event. With such a monumental event occurring during the school day, Purcell Public Schools will be conducting a viewing of the event for students, faculty, and staff members who wish to participate in grades 2nd through 12th grade. Safety is our top priority, and we would like you and your child to be aware of the precautionary steps we are putting in place for the event.
Homemade or ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient ways to view an eclipse, as the reflectivity and polarization are not high enough for viewing the eclipse in a safe manner. To ensure that each participant is safe, Purcell Public Schools will be supplying those who wish to participate with a pair of glasses specifically designed for eclipse viewing. These glasses conform to the transmission requirements of ISO 12312-2, which are filters specifically designed for direct observation of the sun. We will be viewing a partial solar eclipse (at its greatest point will look like a fingernail/crescent shape.) It will be at maximum coverage at 1:44 p.m. That means glasses must be worn at all times during the viewing. Students should never look at the sun without special eye protection, and removing glasses, even temporarily, may have serious effects on your eyes. Outdoor activities will be restricted from 12:00 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. on the day of the eclipse. Precautions will be taken to cover windows where necessary to prevent accidental viewing of the eclipse.
Because of these safety concerns, a parent or guardian signature is required for students to participate in the event using the provided eclipse glasses. Students who do not complete this form and return to the school by April 4, 2024, will not be able to participate. For more information relating to overall safety viewing during an eclipse, https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/safety/
Sincerely,
Sheli McAdoo, Ph.D.

Support for unpaid school lunches gains momentum!
On behalf of our Dragon students we would like to extend a huge Thank You to Mr. Sean Cummings and his late wife, Mrs. Catherine Cummings of The Village. Mrs. Cummings left a legacy of service to her local community as mayor, city council woman, and a well-known restaurant owner. Upon Mrs. Cummings' passing in February, her family asked that those touched by her life consider donating to a Go Fund Me that would be used for unpaid lunch balances in local public schools. The Cummings' family has been so touched by donations that they are able to extend them to schools around the metro. Purcell Schools received $2000 in donation for unpaid lunch balances. Thank you to the Cummings family. Mr. Cummings is pictured below with Suzanne Torvi, Purcell Schools Child Nutrition Clerk.
Follow the legacy that Mrs. Cummings left here.

Our own Dragon community member, Jay Tate also extends this support to our schools by organizing the Dragon Lunch Account program. This program collects money for unpaid lunch balances of students in need. You can donate to this local effort at Purcell First United Bank.
At 9:23 am one of our high school students experienced a medical emergency. Staff responded immediately and emergency responders were contacted. The student was evaluated and transported. Classes remain on normal schedules. We appreciate our staff and local responders for their efforts to keep our students safe.
Purcell Public Schools's Indian Education Committee will meet March 27 at 5:30 pm. The agenda will focus on graduation, student awards and activities supported by the JOM Program. The meeting is in Room 110 of the Admin Bldg and open to the public.
Congratulations to our 2023-24 District Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Stephanie Knowles! Mrs. Knowles has taught at the Intermediate for 5 years and has also served as Intermediate Student Council Sponsor and Asst Coach for JH fast pitch softball.
Mrs. Knowles serves our community and the state as a teacher-leader in Physical Education. Her passion for helping to develop healthy schools here in Purcell and across Oklahoma shines. She serves as the Coordinator for Healthy Schools OK, was selected as their Coordinator of the Year this past summer, and is working with the State Dept to train teachers to incorporate new Health standards into their instruction.
Mrs. Knowles is a Dragon fan at heart and can be seen behind the camera at events capturing the most memorable student moments on and off the fields.
Join us in congratulating Mrs. Stephanie Knowles as she represents Purcell Public Schools as our District Teacher of the Year.
