Mrs. Arnold’s fifth grade social studies lesson on Jamestown was a hands-on and engaging way to teach history through archaeology. Over the three days: • Tuesday: The students learned about archaeology and how it helps us understand history by studying objects from the past. They explored the importance of artifacts in providing insights into the daily lives, cultures, and technologies of earlier civilizations. • Wednesday: The students participated in a simulated archaeological dig related to Jamestown. They likely “discovered” various artifacts that would have been used by the early settlers of Jamestown between 1607 and 1610, immersing themselves in the historical experience. • Thursday: The students then analyzed the artifacts they found, identifying what each item was and explaining its use during the early Jamestown settlement period. This helped them connect the hands-on experience with real historical knowledge about the early years of the English colony. This approach not only teaches history but also reinforces critical thinking, analysis, and a deeper connection to the past through active participation.

In Ms. Greenlee's class, the students went through different team building challenges involving putting a puzzle together. The first challenge included non-verbal communication and the final challenge was talking about where the puzzle pieces belonged, rather than doing the puzzle all by themselves. They learned how to effectively communicate and work together to accomplish their given task!

In PE, we discussed the 5 food groups and what a healthy plate looks like! We learned the benefits of each food group and discussed the difference between "sometimes foods" and "everyday foods!" The five main food groups have different benefits, and eating a variety of foods from each group is important for a healthy diet: Fruits and vegetables: Contain vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which help with digestion and may lower the risk of some diseases. Grains/Carbohydrates: Provide energy for everyday activities and bodily functions. Proteins: Help build and repair bones, muscles, skin, and blood. Dairy: Contains calcium, which is important for strong teeth and bones.

This week, third grade has been reading the story "The Dream Catcher." In Ms. Windham's class, the students learned about the Ojibwe culture and how to create their own dream catcher the way the main character, Peter, did in their story! Also, they used various manipulatives during math rotations to practice new rounding and place value skills.
