Our annual 5th Grade Spring Fling was an amazing success! Student Council chose a beach bash🏖️as their theme this year! We had so many activities to choose from such as volleyball 🏐, 9 square in the air, cornhole, gaga ball, bowling 🎳, and 4 square volleyball. We had a Photo Booth 📸, Tatoos, and 🍧Snowcones! Thank you to Candace Bell for the adorable Beach Bash sign, Gayle Wilson for the snow cones, Pollard Dozer Service for providing pizza 🍕, Matt Moral for helping set up the big games, and all the others who donated their time and/or 💴 to make this event one our fifth graders will ALWAYS remember! 🌊🏄‍♀️🏝️☀️🌺

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will come across the United States, allowing our students to witness a rare solar event. With such a monumental event occurring during the school day, Purcell Public Schools will be conducting a viewing of the event for students, faculty, and staff members who wish to participate in grades 2nd through 12th grade. Safety is our top priority, and we would like you and your child to be aware of the precautionary steps we are putting in place for the event. Homemade or ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient ways to view an eclipse, as the reflectivity and polarization are not high enough for viewing the eclipse in a safe manner. To ensure that each participant is safe, Purcell Public Schools will be supplying those who wish to participate with a pair of glasses specifically designed for eclipse viewing. These glasses conform to the transmission requirements of ISO 12312-2, which are filters specifically designed for direct observation of the sun. We will be viewing a partial solar eclipse (at its greatest point will look like a fingernail/crescent shape.) It will be at maximum coverage at 1:44 p.m. That means glasses must be worn at all times during the viewing. Students should never look at the sun without special eye protection, and removing glasses, even temporarily, may have serious effects on your eyes. Outdoor activities will be restricted from 12:00 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. on the day of the eclipse. Precautions will be taken to cover windows where necessary to prevent accidental viewing of the eclipse. Because of these safety concerns, a parent or guardian signature is required for students to participate in the event using the provided eclipse glasses. Students who do not complete this form and return to the school by April 4, 2024, will not be able to participate. For more information relating to overall safety viewing during an eclipse, https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/safety/ Sincerely, Sheli McAdoo, Ph.D. Superintendent
