Dear Purcell Public School Foundation, Thank you so much for your generous grant! With your support, our 5th-grade scientists are now able to explore the microscopic world using new microscopes and specimen slides. These tools have truly brought science to life in our classroom! We’re incredibly grateful for your investment in our future scientists! With appreciation, Mrs. Jones & the Purcell 5th Graders

This was the perfect event to do just before fall break! Third grade participated in a fun Harvest Hoedown! Each class rotated through the third grade classrooms and the library, engaging in fun activities, such as balloon decorating, bingo playing, directed drawings, food tasting, and enjoying the company of a special guest speaker! Our guest, Nahinli Billy, graduated from Purcell in 2015. He did a fantastic job at engaging the students and helping us make memories with them! Thank you Nahinli Billy!! To all the staff who participated, we appreciate everything you did to support the students and help make their experience memorable!

After harvesting fresh carrots from their school garden today, Mrs. Jones' 5th-grade science class returned to the classroom to fix their own delicious salads using the radishes, lettuce, and carrots they had grown from seed! This hands-on experience not only reinforced their understanding of ecosystems and food webs but also allowed them to combine nutrition and creativity in a fun and educational way!

In Mrs. Arnold's Social Studies classes, students have been studying the fascinating topic of Native American agriculture, specifically the "Three Sisters" gardening method. The students learned how corn, beans, and squash are interplanted to support each other's growth, and we discussed the important role Native Americans played in assisting the early colonists when they arrived in America. Today, we were fortunate to have Laura Vandaveer from OSU Extension's AG in the Classroom program, who conducts monthly lessons on the connection between agriculture and history. The students enjoyed a hands-on craft activity, illustrating how corn grows tall, beans wrap around the stalk, and give nutrients and squash is planted at the bottom to protect the roots from the sun.

The National Weather Service has advised that severe thunderstorms with the potential of high winds, flooding, lightning and a risk of tornadoes will come through our area between 4 a.m. to 9 a.m on Monday, November 18th. This is when we have students waiting at bus stops and parents dropping students off. Out of an abundance of caution, the start of school day will be delayed until 10 a.m. Buses will run on this delayed schedule at 9 a.m.so please plan accordingly. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. Breakfast will be served as usual. Schools will release at normal dismissal time. Parents may also elect to have their student complete the day virtually. Thank you for your understanding and commitment to student and staff safety.

This week has been filled with many learning opportunities for Ms. Windham's third grade class! They learned about the different branches of military in honor of Veteran's Day. There were two branches highlighted each day and the students were tasked with different jobs that would be expected when serving in the military. Some challenges were not pictured, such as decoding cryptic messages, navigating with maps, and engineering structures. In the pictures below, the students are participating in vital communication skills, model satellite building, and boat construction. So much fun!

In PE, we are practicing our basketball skills. Dribble Knockout and Dribble Tag are always engaging for students and help with control under pressure. Using BEEF as a reminder for shooting technique is so effective, too—it’s easy for kids to remember and puts the focus on fundamentals. Students worked together in teams playing Hotshots to practice their shooting! Here are a few pics of our Hotshots Champions! #perocks #dragonpride #ignite

Did you know smoking is the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world? November is a great time to talk about the dangers of tobacco and to live tobacco free! In PE, we will be discussing the dangers of smoking and practicing the skills to say no to peer pressure.
